City to hold community meeting for District 6 community center, West Branch Library

The first meeting of the design development phase for the future District 6 community center and West Branch Library to be located at 1000 South Bascom Ave., site of former Quement Electronics, is scheduled for Nov. 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sherman Oaks Community Center, 1800A Fruitdale Ave. Spanish translators will be available.

Ground breaking for dog park scheduled for Nov. 4


District 9 City Councilwoman Judy Chirco and Albert Balagso, acting director of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, invite Cambrian Park residents to join them at Roy M. Butcher Park on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 1 top 2 p.m. to break ground for a new dog park.

Butcher Park is located on Camden Avenue between Lancaster Drive and Oakwood Avenue.

Construction of the new Butcher Dog Park will complement the growing list of off-leash dog park facilities in San Jose neighborhoods, including Jeffrey Fontana Park, Miyuki Park, Ryland Park and Los Gatos Creek Park in Campbell. The user-friendly park is located within the10-acre Roy M. Butcher Park and will be situated in the northwest corner of the park.

Upon completion, four-legged friends and their owners will be able to use pet-friendly amenities including a double-gated entry, separate large and small dog areas, decomposed granite and artificial turf, benches, a community bulletin board and a small shed for staff and volunteers to store supplies. The facility is designed to accommodate between 30-50 dogs at one time.

The $566,333 project is funded by State Proposition 40 grant, Council District 9 Construction and Conveyance Tax Funds and the Park Trust Funds. Construction of the park is scheduled to start in December, with the grand opening scheduled for June.



Special night planned for expectant moms

Calling all moms to be. There is a special mothers-to-be night on Nov. 9 at First Sight3D4D, 1912 Lincoln Ave. The pregnancy event, presented by First Sight and

Esprit Healing Center, will include special guest speaker Robert Mascarotti, D.C. of Esprit Healing Center, who will speak on various topics including chiropractics, nausea, moodiness, acupuncture and other natural therapies.
The free evening will include food and a discount baby photo and raffle.

The locally owned and operated First Sight offers extensive services from diagnostic ultrasound to 3-D and 4-D pictures of baby and as well as several options, such as CD and DVD packages.

Owned and operated by William Khieu, M.D., president of OB-GYN of Central Coast in Salinas, and Jim Byrne, M.D., head perinatologist at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the focus is not just to provide a fun and educational experience, but to do so with quality care using the latest medical technology for medical purposes rather than the "keepsake-only" ultrasound.

Family members are welcome to attend during scans, which are available by appointments on weekdays, Saturdays and some evenings.

Meeting scheduled for annual review of library bond projects and library parcel tax

The public is invited to attend a Nov. 8 meeting to review the progress and/or expenditures of funds appropriated by the November 2000 branch development bond measure and the November 2004 library parcel tax measure and to ensure that they align with residents' expectations.

The meeting will be held at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, 150 E. San Fernando St., 2nd floor, Room 255/257. It begins at 7 p.m.

The San Jose Library Commission is acting as the citizen oversight committee, which includes David Cohen, Ph.D., Cong Do, Catherine M. Graham, Timothy J. Karas, Donna M. Lydon, Caroline F. Martin, Pia Moriarty, Ph.D., John A. Ramos and Vincent J. Tarpey.

Farewell reception scheduled for Supervisor Jim Beall


After serving for nearly 12 years on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, Jim Beall will be leaving the Board in December. A farewell reception to thank Supervisor Beall for all of his good work in the county community is scheduled for Nov. 13 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the County Government Center, Lower Level Cafeteria.

WGBPA sponsors coat drive

The Willow Glen Business and Professional Association is holding a coat donation drive to collect clean, gently used coats. Items will be donated to Alliance for Community Care and Sacred Heart.
