Council Report

Help celebrate the Cambrian Festival May 17

By City Council member Judy Chirco
Special to the Times

This month we are having our third annual “Celebrate Cambrian” festival on Saturday, May 17 at the Camden Community Center. I am excited to bring our community together and celebrate all the wonderful reasons why District 9 is a great place to live.

The community resource fair will have informational booths on city and county services as well as booths for sponsoring businesses and non-profits. The Cambrian Park Kiwanis Club will serve a free lunch. Free children’s activities and demonstrations of classes that are offered at the center will be ongoing throughout the day. A children’s and senior‘s art competition will be showcased.

We’ll kick off the day’s activities with the South Bay Jazz Society’s Top of the Hill band. At 1 p.m. there will be a mascot dance competition with the area’s favorite mascots including Conrad the Cougar and Our City Forest’s tree. Don’t miss the Groove Kings Band who will be playing from 1 to 3 p.m. The Groove Kings live in our neighborhood and are well known all over the Bay Area as one of the best rock n’ roll bands.

I invite you to bring the whole family for lots of free fun on Saturday, May 17 at the Camden Community Center located at 3369 Union Ave. between Camden and Foxworthy. Overflow parking will be available at the Campbell Union High School District Office next to the community center.

Kiwanis music camp
The Kiwanis Club of Cambrian Park is offering its fifth annual summer music camp for students entering the third grade through the ninth grade. There will be a two-week session devoted to developing instrumental playing through instruction and performance workshops. Workshops include guitar, choir, band, and percussion ensemble.

New classes include folk, blues, and rock guitar. This is great band experience for beginners and advanced students. The music camp will run Mondays to Fridays from Aug. 4–15. The camp will start at 9 a.m. ending at noon. There will be an extended day until 2 p.m. for seventh through ninth graders. The camp will be held at Leigh High School campus. Scholarships will be available through the Kiwanis Club.
